JUDO CLUB

How can I join a Judo Club?

It is most important to start correctly with a qualified Judo Coach. The British Judo Association is the official Governing Body for Judo in the United Kingdom. Clubs registered with the B.J.A. provide qualified coached and you can obtain an up-to-date list of such clubs in your area from the Association Head Office.

Where do I obtain a Judo Suit?

Judo Suits (Judogi), can be obtained via the club coach at a reasonable rate generally cheaper than can be obtained from sports shops, or the internet and the advantage of obtaining them from the club is that you will get a Gi that will stand up to the rigours of training better, as that way you get a reputable brand and not just a designer name.

How old do you have to be to do JUDO?

Judo training can start at any age. B.J.A. members range from 5 to 85. As for starting Judo later in life, whilst you might not expect to reach Olympic standard there are still goals to be achieved. The B.J.A. Dan Grade Register has on record a man who started Judo aged 54 and in 8 years gained his 1st Dan Black Belt.

Why do I need a Licence?

Although the accident rate is far lower than in some other sports it has to be said that Judo is a contact sport. It is therefore wise to have a licence, which gives insurance cover. Gradings and Competitions take place all over the country and throughout the year under the B.J.A. rules and at which anyone taking part must have a valid licence. A Calendar of Events containing details of competitions can be obtained from the B.J.A. Website or Club website.

Do women do Judo

They most certainly do. At this present time we have the pleasure of having a Lady Head Coach who has a varied competitive past including being an ex junior Area player and was one of the Hampshire team coaches, coaching the Hampshire team to many wins over her time.

Do people with disabilities do Judo?

The B.J.A. Inclusion Commission has adopted the motto Judo for All and they work tirelessly to ensure that the sport is open and accessible to players with a wide variety of disabilities. Because of the close contact involved in Judo it is the ideal sport for blind or visually impaired players.
